Sports industry leaders gathered at SBJ Tech Week in NYC to discuss the integration of emerging technologies like AI into their operations. The session, led by Humza Teherany of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships and innovative thinking in leveraging technology for success.

Teherany showcased MLSE’s collaboration with Amazon Web Services, which has led to the development of groundbreaking initiatives like the SportsX incubator program. Through this partnership, MLSE has been able to deploy AWS cloud services across their sports properties, including the Raptors, Maple Leafs, and Toronto FC, and create innovative products like AR glasses that enhance the fan experience with NHL edge-tracking data.

Christa Stout of the Trail Blazers emphasized the potential of generative AI in increasing operational efficiency for sports teams. By integrating tools like ChatGPT into their workflow, teams can streamline tasks like sales and partner prospecting. Stout also highlighted the importance of establishing clear data parameters to ensure the security and integrity of AI models.

Keia Cole of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment stressed the need for proper data classification and education when implementing new technologies. By training employees on the capabilities and limitations of AI tools like GitHub and Microsoft Copilot, organizations can maximize the benefits of these solutions while mitigating potential risks.

Kari Escobedo of the Mariners echoed the sentiment that technology alone is not enough for success. She emphasized the importance of educating and engaging employees in the implementation process to ensure buy-in and understanding of the technology’s impact on their work.

Overall, the panelists agreed that a strategic approach to technology implementation, focused on partnerships, education, and clear communication, is essential for driving innovation and success in the sports industry. As technology continues to evolve, sports teams must adapt and embrace new tools to stay competitive and enhance the fan experience.
