GSA’s Draft Framework Aims to Prioritize AI and LLM Services for Government Agencies

Eric Mill, director of cloud strategy within the Technology Transformation Services at the General Services Administration, recently discussed the draft Emerging Technology Prioritization Framework from the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). The framework is designed to ensure that government agencies have access to secure artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) for various applications.

Published in late January in accordance with an AI executive order signed in October, the draft framework focuses on three key emerging tech capabilities that utilize LLMs: chat interfaces, code-generation and debugging tools, and prompt-based image generators. Mill emphasized that the framework aims to help prioritize AI and LLM services for government use.

As agencies and vendors show increasing interest in AI and LLM services in the cloud, GSA is also addressing potential backlogs in the evaluation process for these tools. Mill highlighted that GSA is implementing short- and long-term structural changes to ensure that FedRAMP operates efficiently and effectively.

“We are intent on ensuring that the urgency around accelerating the government’s use of emerging technologies does not hinder the program’s responsiveness,” Mill stated. The prioritization process outlined in the framework aims to manage the demand for AI and LLM services while maintaining the program’s effectiveness.
