OpenAI Faces New Scrutiny Over AI System Sora, Launches GPT Store for User-Created Chatbots

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company backed by Microsoft, is once again under investigation, this time by the Italian data protection watchdog. The focus of the scrutiny is on OpenAI’s new AI system called Sora, which has the capability to generate short videos based on text prompts.

This investigation marks the second time in recent months that OpenAI has come under the radar of the Italian regulator. Previously, the agency looked into potential data privacy violations related to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a tool that allows users to interact with a large language model chatbot.

The Italian regulator has requested more information from OpenAI regarding Sora, particularly how the AI system handles user data, especially personal information. They are concerned about the potential impact of Sora on data processing within the European Union, with a specific focus on Italy. The regulator has given OpenAI 20 days to provide the requested details.

OpenAI has not yet commented on the investigation, but amidst the scrutiny, the company has launched a new initiative called the GPT Store. This online store allows users to share and potentially monetize custom versions of the popular ChatGPT chatbot.

The GPT Store, available to paid ChatGPT users, serves as a central hub for custom chatbots created for various purposes, such as education or entertainment. Users can browse popular and trending chatbots, create their own, and even monetize their work in a manner similar to Apple and Google’s app stores.

In addition to the GPT Store launch, OpenAI has introduced a new paid tier of ChatGPT tailored for smaller companies, offering additional features and privacy safeguards compared to the free version. This move reflects OpenAI’s efforts to expand its service offerings and generate new revenue streams.

As OpenAI navigates the investigation in Italy and continues to innovate with initiatives like the GPT Store, the company remains at the forefront of AI research and development, shaping the future of artificial intelligence technology.
