EU Investigates OpenAI’s Video-Making Service for Data Privacy Concerns

Italy’s data protection watchdog is turning up the heat on OpenAI once again, this time over concerns regarding the firm’s new artificial intelligence video creation system. The regulator is investigating whether the system, named Sora, could potentially process users’ personal data in the European Union and specifically in Italy.

This is not the first time OpenAI has caught the attention of the Italian regulator, as they are already looking into possible data violations related to the company’s ChatGPT tool. The regulator has given OpenAI a deadline of 20 days to provide information about the new AI service and its potential impact on user data.

OpenAI, based in San Francisco and backed by tech giants Microsoft and Google, has been at the forefront of using artificial intelligence to enhance products. Recently, the company launched an online store where users can share customized versions of their popular ChatGPT chatbot. This move comes as OpenAI aims to expand its services and revenue streams.

The GPT Store, as it is called, will allow users to share their custom chatbots for various tasks, such as teaching math or creating cocktail recipes. Users will eventually have the opportunity to monetize their creations, similar to app stores like Apple’s or Google’s.

As OpenAI continues to innovate and grow its offerings, the scrutiny from regulators like Italy’s data protection watchdog serves as a reminder of the importance of data privacy and security in the age of artificial intelligence.
