Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has made a significant move in the AI space with the launch of Krutrim, a ‘made in India’ large language model and generative AI platform. This platform, developed and owned by Krutrim Si Design, is trained on a massive 2 trillion tokens of textual information, making it the most significant representation of Indian data in the AI landscape.

Named after the Sanskrit word for artificial, Krutrim comes in base and pro models, with the primary version already available for public testing. This AI powerhouse can comprehend 22 Indian languages and generate text in 10 languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam. The pro model, expected to launch between January and March, is designed for solving complex problems.

What sets Krutrim apart from other large language models like ChatGPT is its focus on India. With support for all 22 scheduled languages and a strong representation of Indic language tokens in its training data, Krutrim aims to break down the language barrier in the country. The model’s voice-enabled Generative AI applications cater to the unique needs of Indian users, generating text with a deep understanding of Indian cultural sensibilities.

Aggarwal envisions Krutrim as a game-changer in India’s AI landscape, ushering in a new era of innovation and setting the stage for future paradigms. He believes that by creating indigenous AI technology, India can shape its economic and cultural future, rather than relying on Western products.

With plans to make Krutrim accessible to all users by January 2024 and open up its APIs for developers in February 2024, the platform is poised to empower a wide range of users, from consumers to entrepreneurs and enterprises. As Krutrim continues to evolve and expand its capabilities, it promises to revolutionize the way AI is used and perceived in India.
