UTM Establishes First Faculty of Artificial Intelligence with Focus on Human Values

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has made history by establishing the first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) in the country, with a strong emphasis on instilling human values in its graduates to ensure ethical use of AI technology.

The vice-chancellor of UTM, Profesor Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, highlighted the importance of integrating ethical values into AI technology to prevent misuse and ensure responsible management. The FAI, which has received an initial allocation of RM20 million, has also appointed AI futurist Zack Kass as FAI Adjunct Professor to contribute his expertise in developing human values within the AI curriculum.

“Ethical values are crucial in the use of technology, as without ethics, it can lead to problems for the country,” said Ahmad Fauzi during a press conference at the launch of FAI in UTM Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to establishing the FAI, UTM has been tasked with leading the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium, a research program that brings together public universities and key industries in technology research in Malaysia. This initiative aims to drive innovation in various sectors such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, energy, climate change, and the economy.

Ahmad Fauzi highlighted the collaborative nature of the consortium, stating that universities like Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Malaya will contribute their expertise in specific fields such as medical technology. Through this partnership, UTM and other universities will work together to develop AI technology for the betterment of society and the advancement of the country’s economy.

The establishment of the FAI and the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium will not only produce skilled AI professionals but also contribute to meeting the market demand for talent in this rapidly growing field. This strategic move by UTM signifies a significant step towards harnessing the potential of AI technology while upholding ethical values and promoting responsible innovation.
