UTM Establishes First Faculty of Artificial Intelligence with Focus on Human Values

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) — In a groundbreaking move, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has officially launched the first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) in the country. The FAI aims to produce ethical graduates who are well-versed in AI technology while upholding the values of humanity.

Profesor Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, the vice-chancellor of UTM, emphasized the importance of integrating human values into AI technology to ensure responsible and ethical use. The FAI has received an initial allocation of RM20 million and has appointed AI futurist Zack Kass as FAI Adjunct Professor to contribute his expertise in developing a curriculum that emphasizes human values.

“Ethical values are crucial in the use of technology to prevent misuse and potential problems for the country,” said Profesor Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail during a press conference at UTM Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to establishing the FAI, UTM has been tasked with leading the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium, a research program that brings together public universities and key industries to drive technological advancements in various sectors such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, energy, climate change, and economy.

Through this consortium, universities can collaborate with UTM to develop AI technology that benefits society and contributes to the country’s economic growth.
