Qatar National Library Hosts Libraries Lead Forum 2024 on AI and Digital Access

Doha, Qatar: Qatar National Library recently hosted the Libraries Lead Forum 2024 for the third consecutive year, focusing on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and libraries in ensuring equitable access to information in the digital age. The event, organized in collaboration with the 27th Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Special Libraries Association – Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA-AGC), featured a pre-conference workshop and a special session within the framework of the SLA-AGC conference.

The workshop, titled “Unlocking Digital Competence in the Age of AI: Mastering Essential Skills and Strategies for Librarians”, emphasized the importance of digital and AI competence for librarians in today’s information landscape. Held on March 4th at the Library, the workshop equipped library professionals with essential knowledge and skills to better serve their communities in the digital era.

The special session, held on March 6th, highlighted the crucial role that libraries play in providing access to information and cutting-edge resources. The session, part of the SLA-AGC conference, was inaugurated by H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library.

Dr. Hamad emphasized the importance of investing in alternative energy and diversifying sources of income as Gulf countries transition to knowledge-based economies. He highlighted the role of libraries in advancing these objectives and equipping librarians with the skills to leverage AI and technological innovations.

Under the theme “Libraries’ Roadmap to Digital Dexterity and Proficiency”, the special session featured high-profile speakers discussing the contribution of libraries to fostering digitally literate communities. Speakers included Tan Huism, Executive Director of Qatar National Library, Dr. Achraf Othman from MADA Center, Dr. Susan Karamanian from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Robert Laws from Georgetown University in Qatar.

Tan emphasized the importance of libraries in providing access to knowledge, stating that libraries should leverage AI to advance their mission and enhance digital literacy offerings. Abeer Al Kuwari, the Library’s Director of Research and Learning Services, highlighted the significance of the forum’s theme in aligning with Qatar National Library’s mission to facilitate access to information and learning.

The event showcased the commitment of Qatar National Library and the SLA-AGC to advancing libraries and industry professionals in the digital age, ensuring that libraries continue to play a vital role in providing access to information and promoting digital literacy.
